Lawyer Sisa Namandje, representing former Environment Minister Pohamba Shifeta, has written to the Inspector General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, demanding an investigation into what they claim are false rape allegations and the unlawful leaking of police information to the media.
Namandje states that a rape case was allegedly opened by Naluuleka Alberlin Mengela, the biological mother of Shifeta’s daughter, accusing him of committing an unlawful sexual act in March of this year.
Shifeta’s legal team claims the former minister only learned about the case through social media platforms. They argue that no official communication was made to him or his legal representatives and that the matter appears to be a false allegation motivated by an ongoing domestic dispute.
According to the letter, the alleged rape case was reported to the police after an Interim Protection Order was granted to Shifeta and his wife by the Domestic Violence Court in July.
The order was issued following incidents in which Mengela allegedly threatened Shifeta’s wife and attempted to enter his residence without consent in June.
The lawyers claim that Mengela’s actions are retaliatory and stem from the court’s decision to grant protection to Shifeta’s family. They demand that the police investigate how information about the rape case was leaked to the media before any formal charges were communicated to Shifeta.
Shifeta’s lawyers allege the criminal complaint was made to “terrorise” him and his family and request immediate police intervention and investigation.
The existence of the case was confirmed to NBC News on Tuesday by the |Khomas Regional Crime Investigation Coordinator, Commissioner Crispen Mubebo.
