The Ohangwena Region has recorded a number of achievements in sectors such as health, agriculture, water and land distribution during the 2024/2025 financial year.
These achievements were reported by Ohangwena Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa during her maiden State of the Region Address at Eenhana.
Achievements in the health sector include the construction of the Onanghulo Primary Healthcare Clinic and the completion of the Onamafila Clinic and Onamukulo, which is nearing completion.
In the field of agriculture, extension and engineering services were put in place.
"Provision of subsidised ploughing services and planting to a total of 1,763.4 ha for 1,014 farmers, provision of subsidised improved seeds for 10,868 farmers, provision of subsidised artificial fertiliser to 353 farmers, provision of subsidised weeding services with the registration of 14 community weeding groups."
63 farmers were supported through the poultry value chain development scheme, while 43 others benefited from the National Horticulture Support and Value Chain Development Programme.
The Directorate of Veterinary Services vaccinated 181,686 cattle against lung disease, while 84,992 cattle were vaccinated against foot and mouth disease.
Under the same programme, hundreds of farmers were trained in animal husbandry and transboundary animal disease management.
Hamutumwa said the community continues to face serious challenges related to water provision, despite several interventions introduced.
Access to potable water is difficult for most, as is proper sanitation and livelihood, especially for those living in the region's east.
"It is on that basis that the following interventions were made to address this critical situation: the construction of a 3 km short pipeline was completed; borehole rehabilitation at Omulamba and Okashakati kaNghipunya in Okongo constituency; and 492 private water meters were connected through the region."
Six boreholes were drilled in three constituencies, and 12 were installed in as many villages, while others, in places like Oshikunde, Epembe, and Okongo Constituencies, were rehabilitated.
She commended NamWater for implementing a project in Ohangwena to enhance the region's water supply infrastructure to increase potable water delivery to Eenhana and surrounding communities.
The region also made some progress on land tenure.
"The following registration of communal rights was ratified and approved by the board, and certificates were issued to traditional authorities: 1397 customary land rights, eight rights of leasehold and seven occupational land rights."
Hamutumwa reported illegal fencing on communal land, stating that 196 cases of illegal fences were registered and 15 were issued with notices to be removed.
