Network towers infrastructure and ICT solutions provider, Powercom, has commissioned 25 network towers country-wide at a cost of 40 million dollars.
These include seven in Khomas, four in Erongo, three in Zambezi, two each in Omusati, Otjozondjupa, Kavango East and West, and one each in Karas, Oshana and Oshikoto.
This brings the towers constructed under Powercome to 318 from 276 about four years ago.
Speaking at the inauguration of the symbolic network tower at Iikokola village in Omusati, the ICT minister said the expansion is crucial for smooth communication in urban and rural areas.
Theofelus said it also places innovation, youth empowerment, digital transformation and inclusive growth at the centre of the country's national development plans.
“That is why this tower and 24 others are not merely structures of steel and concrete; they are a foundation. A foundation upon which we will build equity, opportunity, and fairness. It is a foundation that ensures the people of Etayi, the wider Omusati Region, and all the other communities who stand to benefit from the 25 network towers recently completed by PowerCom are not left behind but are equipped to thrive in a digital era.”
Theofelus explained that the expansion of network facilities will be done simultaneously with urban areas.
Powercom's Chief Executive Officer, Beatus Amadhila, said the company continues to expand its footprint in connecting every citizen, noting that 33 more towers are already planned for the next financial year at a cost of 53 million dollars.
“I call upon our operators, Internet Service Providers, and broadcasters to bring these towers to life with reliable, affordable services. I call upon our communities to protect these infrastructures against vandalism and treat these assets as their own. And I call upon our youth, our farmers, our entrepreneurs, and our professionals to use these tools.”
