A charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm has been registered against the officers who are accused of assaulting 44-year-old Melvin ||Areseb at Usakos.

Erongo regional police commander, Commissioner Nikolaus Kupembona, confirmed that investigations are continuing.

He said senior officials were dispatched to Usakos to commence the investigation, as the incident took place at Spitzkoppe, about 71 kilometres northwest of Usakos.

||Areseb, who is recovering at Windhoek State Hospital, earlier told NBC News that police officers handcuffed and assaulted him after they were called to his residence following an argument with his girlfriend.

He said the officers arrived several hours after the dispute had ended, took him into custody, handcuffed him and detained him overnight at the Usakos Police Station.

The following day, he was released and taken by his mother to the Usakos State Hospital before being transferred to Windhoek.

According to ||Areseb, doctors informed him that one of his testicles and some internal organs were damaged.

He has since undergone several surgeries.

The police have not released an incident report, only saying the matter is subject to investigation.

Lawyer Karel !Gaeb of Sisa Namandje Inc., who is representing ||Areseb on a pro bono basis, has announced plans to sue the Namibian Police for N$3 million, as well as the officers involved in their personal capacities.

He said the case reflects a broader pattern of police brutality and lack of accountability, despite several court rulings on similar matters.
