Namibia has made history with the launch of the Namibian Sign Language Model App, a breakthrough tool to bridge communication barriers and empower the hearing-impaired community.

The launch coincided with the International Week of the Deaf, celebrated under the theme "No Human Rights without Sign Language Rights".

Officiating the event, Vice President Lucia Witbooi described the launch as a milestone in Namibia's journey toward inclusivity.

Witbooi says the occupation is not only about technology, but also about recognising the rights and dignity of Namibians.

She reminded the nation that Deaf individuals have long faced exclusion in classrooms, workplaces, health services, and public life because of communication barriers.

"This celebration is a powerful reminder that true equality demands more than tolerance; it requires recognition, respect, and active support for the sign language rights that enable full human participation. Therefore, today, let us celebrate the strength and endurance of the Deaf communities and pledge to champion their voices, ensuring that they are included in decisions that affect their lives. Furthermore, as we celebrate, let us be reminded that communication is at the heart of dignity, equality, and participation in society."

As Namibia observes Deaf Awareness Month, the Vice President called on all Namibians to embrace the new app and ensure that it is accessible and affordable.

"The tool is not just for the deaf community; it is for all individuals, employers, educational institutions, and communities to bridge communication gaps and build a more understanding and integrated society. The App opens doors for young people in education, sport and for adults in the workplace and health service."

The application can be downloaded from the Play Store with or without data.

The mobile application is developed in partnership with the Namibian National Association of the Deaf and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

It is funded by the United Nations Democracy Fund, Namport, the EDeaf South Africa, and Yobicode.
