The 25th anniversary commemoration of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, held in Windhoek, reaffirms Namibia's continued leadership in promoting women's participation in peace and security.
The Deputy Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, Charles Mubita, said Namibia's role in the adoption of Resolution 1325 was driven by conviction and a belief that sustainable peace is impossible without the full and meaningful participation of women.
Dr. Mubita highlighted that the Namibian Defence Force has integrated gender perspectives into its policies, training, and operations, allowing women to serve as active architects of peace rather than just beneficiaries.
"Namibia is prepared to continue setting an example, advocating for gender-responsive defence reforms, fostering regional cooperation with SADC and the African Union, and investing in the empowerment of young women who will uphold the legacy of women, peace, and security."
Mubita emphasised that gender equality in defence and security is not just a side issue but an important part of keeping the country safe.
He further called for renewed collaboration in addressing new and emerging threats, such as climate insecurity, digital warfare, and extremism, while ensuring the protection of female peacekeepers who continue to face serious risks on the ground.
The Deputy Minister concluded by reaffirming Namibia's commitment to lead by example, promoting gender-responsive defence reforms and empowering young women to carry forward the Women, Peace, and Security agenda.
UN Women commended Namibia for its continued leadership in advancing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda 25 years after the adoption of Resolution 1325 in Windhoek.
The UN Women Malawi country representative, Letty Chiwara, congratulated Namibia for establishing the International Women Peace Centre, calling it a global symbol of excellence and a beacon for women's leadership in peacebuilding.
Chiwara emphasised that women across Africa are no longer waiting for permission to lead change; they are already contributing to shaping a more peaceful and inclusive future.
