Delivering an address at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly, National Assembly Speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila underscored the importance of inclusive leadership and gender equality, calling for stronger support systems, mentorship initiatives, and wellness programmes to empower women in leadership roles.

Sharing her personal journey, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila reflected on the challenges she faced as a young woman navigating leadership spaces, saying such experiences underline the need for deliberate interventions.

She urged governments and institutions to invest in structural reforms that promote women’s participation in decision-making, including mandatory gender quotas, maternity benefits, and childcare support.

The Speaker also highlighted the growing digital threats facing women leaders, such as cyberbullying and biased media coverage, stressing that these must be addressed alongside broader equality efforts.

“When we create space for others, we strengthen our institutions and societies and broaden our perspectives. Men and women should work together to promote inclusive leadership for mutual benefit and the building of stronger communities and nations.”

The IPU Assembly serves as a global platform for dialogue on leadership and the advancement of women in public life.
