Swakopmund-based Beifang Mining Technology Services is under fire from its workers for alleged unfair labour practices.

Employees marched through the streets of Swakopmund, alleging that the company alters employment contracts and reduces hourly rates without consultation.

They further described the remuneration, benefits, and appointments as discriminatory.

Workers also claimed that company officials attempted to influence medical reports and silence injured employees through bribery.

They added that the company is non-compliant with safety and health regulations.

Stanislaus Iimbondi, MUN Vice Chairperson for the Western Region, accused the company of "failure to properly record, report, or handle workplace injuries, violations of the project's life-saving rules and regulations, and intimidation of employees who raise safety concerns."

The workers have demanded an independent investigation into all allegations and the implementation of corrective measures.

They are also calling for the restoration of original contracts and the reversal of alleged unlawful changes to employment terms.

Furthermore, they want "equal treatment, an end to discriminatory practices, and the introduction of a fair benchmarking system. Back pay and compensation – immediate payment of all outstanding remuneration and benefits due to affected employees."

Eddy Christiaan, the Head of Human Resources at Beifang Mining, received the petition.

He said, "I believe none of the issues raised are insurmountable. We believe in the ability of all parties to resolve issues through open and constructive dialogue. Therefore, our assurance is that the matter will be escalated to the necessary levels, and management will revert."

Beifang Mining Technology Services is a contractor at the Rössing Uranium and Husab Mines near Arandis in the Erongo Region.
