The Principal of Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana High School in the Etayi circuit, Omusati Region, Victor Nanghama, has called on the Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture, Dr. Sanet Steenkamp, and the Prime Minister, Dr. Elijah Ngurare, to urgently visit his school and intervene in the matter of an unregistered government hostel that remains unused despite being completed.
The government constructed the hostel in 2022 for N$44 million, but it is still not operational because it has not yet been officially registered.
Once the registration process is completed, the hostel can be fully equipped with bedding, mattresses, and other essential amenities, allowing learners to move in and benefit from proper accommodation.
In the meantime, 45 learners are being housed in makeshift corrugated iron structures built by parents as a temporary solution.
Nanghama expressed concern about the poor living conditions of the learners in the shacks, describing the situation as unacceptable and unsafe.
The learners live in overcrowded shack structures without supervision, cooking their own food provided by their parents.
Lack of supervision has contributed to teenage pregnancies, with eight learners currently pregnant at the school.
