The International University of Management (IUM) has donated medical equipment worth N$8.5 million to the Ministry of Health and Social Services.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare, speaking at the handing-over ceremony, stressed the importance of access to satisfactory medical care, saying a lack of medical equipment or assistance should not be the cause of anyone's death.
"We must sustain and maintain public health infrastructure because access to medical care is a right and not a privilege. People should not die due to a lack of medicine or doctors in hospitals. God forbid they should only die because there was nothing medical personnel could do to save their life."
The donation will benefit the Rundu State Hospital.
The Minister of Health and Social Services, Esperance Luvindao, emphasised that everyone is entitled to quality medical care, regardless of their social status or financial situation.
"Vision April 2026 is not there to get facilities ready for VIPs. Vision April 2026 states that if it is good enough for Namibian citizens from Havana, Hakahana, or wherever, then it should be good enough for the Minister of Health and Social Services. What we are trying to do is not get it fit for executives or VIPs; we are trying to get it to a standard where all people, no matter where they come from or no matter how much money they have in their pocket, can access the same quality of health care."
The equipment includes medical liquid suction machines, ICU patient monitors, infant incubators, foetal monitors and operating tables with x-ray examination.
IUM Founder David Namwandi pointed out that IUM may not be wealthy, but because they care, this donation will make a difference.
"As a dynamic university, IUM has not shied away from setting sustainable solutions with its impending presence in the health care sector. It is safe to say that we are not wealthy, but we care, we care, we care. This little donation, underline the word "little", will run new medical equipment with a value of N$8.5 million."
IUM will transport all the equipment to Rundu with the aim of bringing improved health care to the people.
