The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR), Inge Zaamwani, has emphasised the importance of producing sufficient food to feed the nation in meeting the country's Sustainable Development Goals.

Zaamwani emphasised this in a speech read on her behalf at the commemoration of World Food Day at Ncamagoro Village in the Kavango West Region.

World Food Day is used to take stock of success and challenges such as hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, as well as how these can be addressed.

The Deputy Executive Director of MAWLR, Alfred Sikopo, said, "It is about laying the foundation for the future where our agrifood systems are sustainable, inclusive, and resilient to the challenges of climate change and economic uncertainty. It is about creating opportunities for our farmers, empowering our youth in agriculture, and fostering innovation that will drive productivity and safeguard our natural resources."

The government has implemented strategic initiatives such as the Green Schemes, Value Chain Development and the Dry-land Crop Production Programmes, which are all designed to enhance agricultural output.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is actively working with the government to transform the country's agriculture sector.

Ferdinand Mwapopi is the Officer in Charge at FAO who stated, "Here in Namibia we must strengthen support for communal farmers and improve access to land rights, especially for women and youth. Credits and finance, appropriate technology training in good agronomical practices. Improving cost harvest lost and connecting to markets both domestic and regional especially taking advantage of the African continental free trade area. "

At the event 4 agricultural projects received donations of farming implements courtesy of FAO, GIZ, WFP and the Ministry of Agriculture.

The ministry also donated food items and fruit trees to some less privileged households at Ncamagoro Village.
