A thunderstorm struck Aranos in the Hardap Region on Tuesday, causing the roofs of several residents' homes to blow off.

Wind-borne pieces of the roof sheets struck two children, causing them to sustain minor injuries.

Aranos Constituency Councillor Salomon Boois confirmed that several affected households had to be temporarily housed at shelters provided by local churches.

Most of the affected houses are located in the town's informal settlement, according to the councillor.

"This is a very unfortunate situation, but luckily we have the constituency emergency management committee, and we have kicked in immediately, assisted by the regional committees."

According to Boois, officials are still busy assessing the extent of the damage.

Aranos Town Council Management Committee Chairperson Marilyn Classen said the Office of the Prime Minister provided relief assistance in the form of 20kg bags of rice, tents, and mattresses for distribution among the affected households.

"We have budgeted N$100,000 for disaster. The thing is, we haven't decided; we are still in a meeting right now. Others are busy on the ground, others are in a meeting, and we are busy putting up a plan."
