The ||Kharas Regional Council has delivered food aid to families left reeling after a fire destroyed their homes at Aussenkehr Grape Valley farms in the ||Kharas Region.
The devastating fire, which tore through Aussenkehr's Block 5 location on Saturday afternoon, destroyed several reed and corrugated iron zinc houses.
It left 44 households displaced, many of them losing all their personal belongings, including national documents.
Karasburg West Regional Councillor Katrina Cloete told NBC News that the council assisted the affected with food parcels, including meat, rice and maize meal, to help them cope with the aftermath of the fire.
Cloete said victims, most of them employed as seasonal and permanent workers at Aussenkehr-based grape companies, are temporarily housed in tents.
"The council is looking at the possibility of decongesting these workers in the newly proclaimed settlement. The farmers are encouraged to construct proper houses for their workers by following the good example of the Namibia Grape Company, which constructed them for their employees."
Cloete said the cause of the fire has not yet been established.
She noted most of the fire victims were at work when the fire broke out, only returning home to scenes of destruction.
One person sustained burns to his feet during the blaze. No fatalities were reported.
