Namibia has urged respect for international law and Venezuela's sovereignty following the capture of that country's president, Nikolas Maduro, and his wife by the US.
The Ministry of International Relations and Trade (MIRT), in a statement, affirmed that the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of all nations must be fully respected in line with the UN Charter and the core principles of international law for the enhancement of global peace and stability.
Namibia reaffirmed its steadfast friendship, solidarity and cooperation with Venezuela based on a shared history of anti-colonial struggle for self-determination and independence.
The statement further said Namibia supports the active involvement of multilateral organisations, including the United Nations and regional bodies, to ensure the protection of international law and sovereignty among all nations.
It also supports the convening of a UN Security Council session on the unfolding situation in Venezuela and encourages the international community to prioritise dialogue and diplomacy.
