The Ministry of International Relations and Trade says the government is actively working to assist Namibian nationals who are trapped in fraud and exploitation networks in Myanmar and Thailand.
According to the Ministry, criminal groups are luring foreign nationals to these countries by promising jobs, especially in online work, education, and sports. Many of those who accept these offers later find themselves trapped in dangerous and abusive situations.
In a statement, the government says it is providing consular support and using diplomatic channels to bring affected Namibians back home. This work is being done together with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and authorities in the region.
Last year, IOM helped return seven Namibians who were stranded in Myanmar. The Ministry says this shows the importance of countries working together to protect citizens abroad.
The Ministry says investigations are still underway to determine whether the Namibians are victims of human trafficking or other crimes. However, the government has made it clear that humanitarian assistance and bringing citizens home remain the top priority.
Currently, 24 Namibians have been identified as being caught up in these situations.
So far, four have already been assisted to return home through the Namibian High Commission in Malaysia. Efforts are continuing urgently to help the remaining individuals.
The government has acknowledged the pain and worry faced by families and assured them that every possible step is being taken.
The Ministry is also warning the public to be extremely careful about job offers abroad. Namibians are advised to verify all overseas opportunities with the Ministry of International Relations and Trade or Namibian missions before travelling.
