The President of the Namibia Football Association (NFA), Robert Shimooshili, has welcomed the appointment of Acting General Secretary Mabos Vries, while also expressing appreciation to outgoing Interim General Secretary Cassius Moetie for his service to Namibian football.
The move comes as NFA President Robert Shimooshili emphasised the importance of appointing an Acting General Secretary to ensure stability within the association. Following a period where management candidates had to rotate according to customary practice, the association is now prioritizing continuity.
"It is not something strange; it is something normal. In fact, we are even late. Since our last General Secretary passed on, we did not have a substantive General Secretary. As a result, according to customary practice, management candidates had to rotate. The initial plan was to have them serve for about six months, but we went beyond that in order to accommodate stability and continuity within football," Shimooshili said.
Shimooshili applauded the appointment of Mabos Vries, citing his vast experience in football administration. With more than 30 years in the game, Vries has served at league, association, and club levels, establishing himself as a key figure in football management.
"Based on the experience that Mr Mabos has, it is extremely high. He has more than 30 years' experience in football. He has served at league level, association level, and club level. In terms of football administration, he is one of the top football leaders when it comes to football management," he noted.
The NFA President, however, did not provide a specific timeline for the appointment of a substantive General Secretary. While the application process commenced in December last year and closed on the 20th of January, the association remains focused on a steady transition rather than a rushed appointment.
"We expected to appoint someone anytime from now... However, we must be mindful of stability and continuity. Stability is very important. We have been changing too much, and we need to slow down to protect the stability of the association and football in this country," Shimooshili added.
Shimooshili called on the football fraternity to unite and support the office of the General Secretary, describing Vries as a peaceful man and an insider who is ready to serve. He concluded by thanking outgoing Interim General Secretary Cassius Moetie for his dedication and service to the Executive Council.
"On behalf of the Executive Council, we would like to express our appreciation to the outgoing Interim General Secretary for his unwavering dedication and commitment. He served the Executive Council to the best of his ability. He tried, and he did well," Shimooshili concluded.
