Namibia is taking a major step toward strengthening its fight against cybercrime by aligning its domestic laws with new global standards to combat digital fraud, online exploitation, and cyber threats.
Executive Director in the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Linda Aipinge-Nakale, said the country has aligned itself with the study of other laws on digital protection, cybercrime and financial transactions.
In this regard, Namibia has ratified the African Legal Convention on Cybercrime and Digital Protection.
The Director of Legal Services in the Senate of Kenya, Johnson Okoth Okello, stated that since Namibia has already signed the Convention, the next step is for Namibia to complete domestic ratification.
The Chief Legal Officer at the Namibia Law Reform, Chisom Obiudo, said Russia came up with the proposal to have a UN international convention on cybercrime.
Obiudo added that after deliberation, it was decided through the general assembly resolution 74/247 to establish the open-ended ad hoc committee of intergovernmental experts.
