The University of Namibia (UNAM) has officially launched its 2026 academic year with messages of transformation, innovation, and shared responsibility.

The university welcomed a historic intake of more than 11,000 first-year students across its 12 campuses countrywide.

UNAM Vice Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu, said the institution will focus on igniting institutional transformation that delivers real impact for Namibia.

He stressed that education must go beyond qualifications and actively contribute to national development, global competitiveness and self-reliance.

"And this is very crucial that we keep in mind as you go to class to teach or to learn; keep these three in mind. I'm doing my psychology degree or my medicine degree for purposes of being internationally competitive, to create self-reliance for this country and to be able to promote the welfare of the citizens."

Professor Matengu explained that the university will prioritise improving student experience and success, strengthen its research capacity and strive for innovation, amongst other things.

Alumni Association Chairperson Dr Alisa Amupolo urged students to build strong internal systems of discipline and consistency.

"But success, ladies and gentlemen, is not an accident. It's actually an internal system that you as a student must continuously and consistently build. I therefore urge you to foster your academic motivation and renew your commitment today. Yes, academic motivation starts with intrinsic motivation."

The Student Representative Council (SRC) President Enrico Goseb called for discipline, accountability and shared excellence between students and staff, while encouraging first-year students to take pride in joining an institution that continues to rise in continental recognition.

"Let me say this: you are stepping into a university that is bringing strength, confidence and continental standing. Be proud, not just because you have been admitted into this institution, but because you now carry the UNAM name."
