The Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) has cancelled plans to relocate Fishrot corruption-accused inmates from single cells in C-Section to Echo Section at Windhoek Correctional Facility.

The facility informed inmates it has withdrawn the previous notice, which cited security concerns about housing the "high-profile" inmates together.

The withdrawal comes amid a dispute over reduced study time for 18 inmate students and allegations that officials tried to frustrate their urgent court application.

The inmates claim they were scheduled to appear in court last Friday at 09:00 but only arrived at 09:57, nearly 30 minutes late, despite instructions to be ready at 08:30. They allege the delay was deliberate.

They've also questioned what measures are in place to ensure timely transport for inmates with active court matters.

The inmates suggest Commissioner General Raphael Hamunyela may be unaware of these issues, noting he supports inmate education while alleging disconnects with facility staff.

Questions directed to Assistant Commissioner Salmi Hangula regarding the reasons for the delay, including whether logistical or security challenges played a role, as well as whether the Commissioner General has been informed, remain unanswered at the time of publication.
