Three suspects arrested for shooting and injuring an elephant at Omugulugwombashe village in the Omusati region last week were granted bail of N$800 each during their first appearance in the Okahao Magistrates Court.
The suspects have been identified as 23-year-old Paulus Wilhelm, 51-year-old Ndeshipanda Kaapangelwa and 34-year-old Awala Ndinelago Inamugadhimbwa.
The trio face separate charges, which range from possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition and failing to store the firearm in a safe.
Omusati police regional commander Commissioner Ismael Basson says investigations revealed that the suspects shot the elephant with a . 303 hunting rifle, injuring its back legs whilst it was in a mahangu field.
The elephant later killed one of the onlookers, a 46-year-old woman.
