Plans for the construction of the Nkurenkuru District Hospital are back on track after a 12-year delay.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the project was initially held in 2014.

Ahead of the commencement of construction, a public consultation meeting was held in the town as part of the environmental impact assessment process.

Stakeholders in attendance shared their concerns and expectations and requested the construction of an intermediate hospital rather than a district or regional facility.

The project will include site clearance and bulk earthworks; the construction of hospital buildings and related facilities; the installation of boreholes and water supply infrastructure; the development of sewerage systems, including drying ponds; medical and general waste management facilities; access and internal roads with parking areas; and the installation of electricity, stormwater drainage, and other utilities.

Currently, the region relies on Nkurenkuru District Hospital services at Nankundu, while patients requiring advanced care are referred to the Intermediate Hospital at Rundu, about 130 kilometres away.

The hospital will be built on 40 hectares of previously undeveloped land donated by the Nkurenkuru Town Council.
