Former Director General of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Ben Mulongeni, has reminded the media of its vital role in ensuring fair reporting.

Dr. Mulongeni, who reaffirmed his passion for journalism, paid a visit to NBC DG Menesia Muinjo.

Dr. Mulongeni addressed the role and mandate of NBC, noting misunderstandings about its objectives and urging journalists to report fairly to promote transparency and accountability in the media.

"There is a significant misunderstanding regarding NBC's role and mandate, especially among politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties; many believe they are not adequately represented because, as a public service broadcaster, NBC is funded by taxpayers. Don't be afraid, for as long as you are fair and professional."

Muinjo said the workforce is ready for the tasks ahead and thanked Dr. Mulongeni for his guidance and support, and emphasised the importance of balance and fairness.

"Thank you so much for your words of wisdom. You are giving back, and it's good to know someone cares enough to say, 'Yes, you have been in the industry, but remember your core function: editorial independence.' The issue of balance and fairness that you just mentioned – we really stand for that. It has been part of our training; it has been part of practical experience, but also the industry is evolving."

Muinjo took over as the Director General of the NBC this month.
