DRC President Felix Tshisekedi hinted at a potential third term “if people want me” during a World Press Freedom Day event in Kinshasa.

“I haven’t sought a third term, but if the people want me to have one, I will accept it,” he said.

Current rules limit presidents to two five-year terms, so constitutional reform would be required.

Tshisekedi expressed his wish for stability and dignity in the DRC, saying, “I am in favor of analyzing and hiring experts to study the Constitution because there are difficulties involved.”

He added he would be “happy to finish my two terms,” but if asked by the people to continue, “I am at their disposal as long as God gives me the energy.”

Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame agreed to the ‘Washington Peace Accords’ last December while violence involving M23 militants continues in eastern DRC.
