The takeover of the Katima Mulilo abattoir by ZamCo from MeatCo is underway, with the two institutions conducting information sessions on operations ahead of the handover scheduled for 1 July.

As part of preparations for its exit at the end of June, MeatCo has stopped procuring livestock to reduce stock levels and ensure no animals remain in quarantine awaiting slaughter.

According to the transition plan, ZamCo is expected to begin procuring livestock from local farmers as early as next week to ensure continuity and avoid disruptions for producers in the region.

MeatCo dismissed reports claiming farmers had not been paid. Interim Chief Executive Officer Albertus Aochamub said all farmers countrywide who supplied livestock up until February had been paid in full, with outstanding payments for supplies over the past two months due for finalisation next week.

He assured producers that all financial obligations would be honoured before the handover was completed.

Meanwhile, ZamCo Chairperson Richard Chilinda said the incoming institution is prepared to resume operations, noting that ZamCo has secured an investor to provide financial support during the initial stages until the company achieves stability.

Both parties confirmed that the agreement guarantees no job losses.
