The One Economy Foundation held its annual Media Awards yesterday in the capital.
The awards recognise journalists and media practitioners whose reporting focuses on issues such as gender-based violence, femicide, sexual and reproductive rights, mental health, and child protection.
Among the categories were best Television, Radio, Print Media, Digital Media and best upcoming.
Veripuami Kangumine from the Namibian and Isai Sipunga from the New Era scooped the awards for best female and best male, with Rita Lotto, representing One Africa Television, winning the award for best upcoming journalist.
NBC News reporter Emil Seibeb won the Best Television Journalist award for a story on unsolved murders of women around Windhoek, while NBC Kati FM producer and presenter Salimi Gerhard walked away with the Best Radio Journalist award.
Puyeipawa Nakoshole from The Namibian received the award for Print, and Allexer Namundjebo from the Windhoek Observer took home the award for Digital Content.
The Executive Chairperson of the One Economy Foundation, Monica Geingos, expressed gratitude to the nominees for their steadfast dedication and commitment to being the voice of the voiceless.
"It's very rare for journalists to hear from the public when you do something right. So we are going to say 'more often than not' to get it right. Of course, there are times you get it wrong; the Media Ombudsman is there, he'll tell you. But today is about the many, many, many times you got it right, but it didn't matter. And you're remembered for the one or two times that you got it wrong."
