The Ongwediva-based Modern Volleyball Club is constructing a beach volleyball court in Ongwediva, Oshana Region.

As part of efforts to expand sporting facilities in the town, the Modern Volleyball Club, in collaboration with the Ongwediva Town Council, has secured land for Ongwediva’s first dedicated volleyball facility.

The beach volleyball court will serve the club’s 40 members, local youth, and surrounding communities, and will be open to the public under the club’s supervision.

NBC Sport visited the site and spoke to Ongwediva Town Council member Penda Kashiyakumwa, who explained how the initiative started and encouraged public support for the project.

“The youth from Modern Volleyball Club met us halfway when they submitted their proposal requesting land to develop a beach volleyball court. The council was happy and searched for suitable land, which we allocated to them. We are very proud of them because they are using it for its intended purpose, and this complements the developments the Council is already undertaking. I would also like to encourage the Ongwediva community to see this initiative as a community project that everyone should support. As you can see, they need sand and cement to build the retaining wall to keep the sand in place, and equipment to level the area. Any contribution, even a bag of cement, would help. I encourage the public to come forward and assist the club.”

Club director Simeon Bernardino outlined the vision behind the project, saying the facility is intended to promote volleyball development in the region.

“What we are currently doing is constructing the first artificial beach volleyball court in northern Namibia, here in Ongwediva. The plan is to involve the whole community, not only people from Ongwediva, but also nearby towns, by hosting activities for corporate companies, schools, the general public, and professional athletes. We would love to see people engage in this sport and help grow beach volleyball in the region to the same standards seen at the coast and in Windhoek. It is an opportunity for both young and old to come together, play, and have fun in the sand.”

The facility is being developed on a 4,000-square-metre plot, with the initial setup sponsored by Modern Tours Transfer for N$50,000.

An additional N$30,000 is required to complete the project, which is expected to be finalised between mid- and late June 2026.
