The ||Kharas 102.3 FM community radio has expanded its coverage in the ||Kharas Region despite financial challenges.

Its assistant station manager, Mona Lizel Basson, in an interview with NBC News, announced CRAN recently issued licences for frequencies in the town of Karasburg and |Koes Village .

A trusted source of information, education, and entertainment for the southern community since its launch in 2008, the station initially served listeners from Keetmanshoop and surrounding villages and farms located within an 80-kilometre radius.

It later expanded its coverage to Lüderitz, and now the towns of Karasburg and |Koes Village,

Basson says, "With the help of our community and funding, hopefully, if not this year, we shall step by step be going to cover the whole of the ||Kharas region, because we want to spread the message to everyone in the ||Kharas region; no one should be excluded."

Basson said she hopes for the rapid implementation of the Community Media Policy Framework, developed by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology with UNESCO's support, as it will enhance the sustainability of all community radio stations.

"With that coming in, the vision and mission for the next five years are to see ||Kharas FM broadcasting in all areas in the ||Kharas region and every constituency."

Basson said despite challenges such as funding needed for equipment and paying incentives to presenters, the doors will remain open as they shall continue to broadcast for the communities.
