Through the stories they tell, journalists have the power to transform awareness into action and shape the narrative of Africa.
These were the words of the Secretary General of the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) at the NBC @ 35 Years celebration in Windhoek today.
Nomhle Kangootui reminded media professionals that they are more than just conveyors of news; they are educators, advocates and catalysts for change.
She noted that their stories have the power to inform, inspire and mobilise communities towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, which include eradicating poverty, ensuring quality education, addressing climate change and promoting peace and justice.
She stressed that Africa's narrative has too often been shaped by external voices and that it's time for journalists and content creators to take charge of its story.
Such work, she says, can be done by telling authentic stories, challenging stereotypes, highlighting Africa's successes and addressing its unique challenges with honesty and integrity.
Kangootui says this is essential for fostering pride, resilience and informed participation across societies.
