Several lower-division football leagues across the country are concluding their seasons, and the Okakarara Third Division League is among them.
Chilli Boys Football Club from Okondjatu were crowned champions over the weekend, moving a step closer to promotion to the Otjozondjupa Second Division. The club's league triumph has boosted hopes in the Okondjatu community as the team prepares for a possible appearance in the regional promotional playoffs.
For head coach Warrent Richard Kashe Kandyangu, winning the Okakarara Third Division title is the result of months of hard work and commitment. Kandyangu noted that the team's journey was not without challenges, particularly the long distances travelled to fulfil league fixtures in areas such as Okakarara, but he believes the players' determination made the difference. Kandyangu described the title win as a massive achievement for both the team and the entire community of Okondjatu. He highlighted that the squad was built entirely from the grassroots level, and the players consistently went out onto the pitch determined to prove they could be the best in the league.
Despite achieving their ultimate goal of bringing silverware to the community, Kandyangu highlighted that logistical and financial constraints were constant obstacles throughout the campaign. The head coach explained that as a village-based team, securing reliable transportation was a continuous struggle, compounded by a lack of formal sponsorship. He credited the triumph to the team's ability to work with their limited resources and still deliver their absolute best on the field.
Team captain Operi Rukata echoed his coach's sentiments, describing the championship-winning campaign as a demanding testing ground for the squad. Rukata acknowledged that the season was filled with various ups and downs, but emphasised that the players remained mentally and physically locked in for every fixture. He noted that by taking the competition one match at a time, they managed to keep pushing through the gruelling journey because they had a clear vision of their ultimate goal.
Both Kandyangu and Rukata emphasised the importance of their fan base, stating that the club's success is deeply rooted in the unwavering commitment of the people of Okondjatu.
With the league title now officially secured, Chilli Boys FC awaits communication regarding the dates for the Otjozondjupa Second Division promotional playoffs, where they look to take the final step toward promotion.
