President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has met with families of some of Namibia's fallen liberation fighters, including Augustus Nghaamwa, known by his combat name, McNamara, in an emotional moment that unfolded in the Kongwa District of the Dodoma Region.
The Kongwa district holds a historic site that carries memories of Namibia's liberation struggle.
MacNamara was a prominent Namibian liberation hero and senior commander in the People's Liberation Army of Namibia.
He died in exile in 1982.
His daughter, Nashikale, shared her family's journey, saying that after travelling to Namibia, she later found herself back in Tanzania, holding onto the hope of returning home, a hope that never became a reality.
She recalled that her father lost his life during the liberation struggle while crossing between Zambia and Angola after stepping on a landmine.
Also beside her was her mother.
She lost two of her other daughters, both buried in Namibia, hoping that one day she will visit their graves.
Nashikale told President Nandi-Ndaitwah about her wish to return to Namibia, and the head of state pledged assistance.
Kongwa remains an important symbol of Namibia's liberation history, having served as a refuge, training, and operational base for freedom fighters, which saw PLAN establishing its primary exile base there from 1964.
