Development partners have inaugurated a N$394 million Sekelduim substation east of Swakopmund.
This substation is expected to strengthen power supply across the Erongo Region.
Constructed by Nampower, the Sekelduin Substation is supported by Erongo RED and other development partners.
The Deputy Minister of Industries, Mines, and Energy Gaudentia Kröhne, said the project demonstrates the government's commitment to strengthening energy security.
The substation will also increase network capacity and reduce the risk of power interruptions.
Kröhne said a reliable energy supply remains critical for key economic sectors.
“Reliable electricity improves livelihoods, enables small businesses to grow, strengthens service delivery in schools and hospitals, and creates opportunities for communities to participate in economic development.”
Erongo RED Chief Executive Officer Immanuel !Hanabeb said growing electricity demand in Swakopmund and increased requirements from mining operations made the project a necessity.
“At Erongo RED, our mandate is clear: to distribute and supply safe, reliable, sustainable, and accessible electricity to the communities we serve. We are cognisant that electricity is not only about bringing light; rather, it is more than that; it is a catalyst for economic growth, industrial development, job creation, and improved quality of life.”
The substation has created an additional 60 megawatts of capacity.
NamPower Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu said the facility is Africa's first digital substation designed and built by African professionals.
“The project will enable increased electricity transfer and wheeling from south to north and north to south. With an estimated project cost of N$2 billion, the 400 kV Auas-Kokerboom Transmission Line is expected to be commissioned in the second half of 2028. The 400 kV Obib-Oranjemond Transmission Line Project is the second interconnector to Eskom and is anticipated to provide the stability necessary for the NamPower grid.”
Haulofu added that the substation forms part of NamPower's broader infrastructure master plan, which includes several billion-dollar projects to strengthen the national grid and support the country's long-term development goals.
