Nurses and healthcare workers in Tsumeb benefited from a specialised palliative care training programme.
The training was aimed at strengthening the delivery of home-based healthcare services.
The training was conducted through a partnership between HOPE Home-Based Health Care in Tsumeb and the Bern Center of Higher Education in Nursing, a collaboration that has been in place since 2023.
The two institutions have worked closely over the years, particularly through student exchange programmes, providing practical training opportunities and promoting the sharing of expertise in healthcare.
The training followed the continued cooperation between the organisations, including a visit by Uises, to the Bern Center in Switzerland.
Uises explained. “I had the opportunity in December last year – it's 3 years later – to go and visit, and on my arrival, the university again felt that they needed to come see what is happening on the ground in Tsumeb.”
The visit focused on strengthening collaboration and exchanging knowledge in palliative and home-based care.
Participants received training on various aspects of palliative care, which focuses on improving the quality of life of people living with serious illnesses through pain and symptom management, as well as emotional, social and practical support for patients and their families.
“It is encouraging to see healthcare workers and officials from the ministry coming together to strengthen their skills and expertise,” stressed Tsumeb’s Deputy Mayor Lischen Claasen.
The initiative provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to enhance their skills and share experiences, contributing to improved healthcare services and strengthening partnerships in the field of nursing education and community-based care.
