The government has allocated N$34 million to improve sanitation across the country.
Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare informed the National Assembly that should this amount not be sufficient, his office will engage with local authorities.
Dr. Ngurare was responding to a question by Landless People's Movement (LPM) MP Dawid Eigub on what distribution model will be used to allocate funding to the various regions and whether it would be sufficient to achieve the intended sanitation outcomes.
Just recently, the government declared a housing and sanitation 'state of emergency'.
To implement this project, the government allocated that amount.
Eigub wanted to know how far the government has progressed with the implementation phase.
“If you look at N$34 million, if you look at 14 regions—that's about N$2,4 million per region. If you look at various local authorities and village councils, you're looking at about N$170,000 per region. So, Honourable Prime Minister, with me having sufficient and extensive experience around the servicing of land, I'd like to ask: How is it going to be applied, and what will the distribution model be to the various recipients for this planned funding?"
Although the funds are not enough, the Premier maintained that it is a good start.
The funding will therefore be directed to areas in need to supplement existing resources.
“Should we divide that among the 59 local authorities, 121 constituencies, and 14 regions? Probably not. Rather, where the need is more pronounced, the funding can be used to top up what is required. But let me conclude by saying that I hope the honourable member remembers that we had this conversation offline. We are good brothers, and we discussed. In the event that N$34 million is not sufficient, we would be very amenable to hearing from local authorities. I know there are local authorities that have already done a great deal with the money."
