The Welwitschias Invitational XV suffered a narrow 50-47 defeat against the Vodacom Blue Bulls in an entertaining rugby friendly at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek on Saturday. The highly competitive fixture gave the hosts a platform to test their squad depth, while the visiting South African franchise utilised the match to prepare for their upcoming Currie Cup campaign.

The Welwitschias initiated the scoring with an early penalty, but the Blue Bulls hit back two minutes later through a try from Mawanda Mdanda. The home side quickly reclaimed the lead when vice-captain Danco Burger crossed the line and successfully added the conversion. Midway through the first half, the visitors responded as JJ Motlhodi scored a try, which was converted by Keagan Johannes. A late first-half effort from Obert Nortjie kept the Namibian side within striking distance, with the Blue Bulls holding a 24-20 advantage at the interval.

The second half delivered another intense exchange of points. Burger slotted an early penalty before strong build-up play from Prince !Gaoseb set up another converted try for the hosts. Although the Blue Bulls fought back with a try of their own, the Welwitschias kept up the pressure by crossing the whitewash twice more. With less than ten minutes remaining on the clock, Jaylon Carew finished off a series of attacking phases to put the Welwitschias ahead. However, the Blue Bulls secured the victory in the dying minutes when a powerful scrum created the necessary space for Melt Viljoen to dot down, sealing the 50-47 win.

Despite the defeat, Welwitschias Head Coach Darryl De La Harpe praised his young squad's commitment, stating that their work is far from finished. He noted that the performance proved there is a promising future ahead for Namibian rugby, encouraging the public and stakeholders to support and invest in these young athletes to help elevate the national team.

Blue Bulls coach Wessel du Plessis described the fixture as ideal preparation for the Currie Cup campaign, giving credit to the Welwitschias for remaining highly competitive and pushing the match right down to the final whistle. Du Plessis added that the outing served as an important learning curve for his young side, which features several players under the age of 20, helping them build chemistry and gain critical game experience to carry forward into their upcoming tournament.

While the final scoreline favored the visitors, the Welwitschias displayed formidable competitiveness against quality opposition and will look to carry this performance into future fixtures.
