Namibia and Russia are moving towards the launch of a joint space programme, with plans that could include building and launching a satellite, training Namibian engineers and introducing space-related university programmes.

The initiative is being developed with Russian space technology company SPUTNIX, 
Further details are expected to be announced in Moscow in October.

The plans follow engagements held in Windhoek in July between SPUTNIX, the university sector and government agencies.

SPUTNIX Group General Director Pavel Resnyanskiy says the discussions showed strong interest in Namibia in developing its capacity in the space sector.

The proposed programme is expected to move beyond classroom-based learning and will give Namibian students practical experience in satellite engineering, hardware and software development.

"Our dream is simple: a young student should have the opportunity to grow up and become a satellite engineer right here at home in Namibia." 

The programme could also introduce university degrees focused on the analysis of space data, including Earth observation imagery and marine traffic data.

Resnyanskiy says the applications of space technology extend beyond satellites and engineering.

"Space is not just about rockets in the sky. It helps farmers, protects wildlife and border security, improves weather forecasts and helps with disaster response." 

The proposed cooperation also aims to support government ministries by providing space-based information for practical applications.

SPUTNIX says Namibia could eventually develop its own expertise and provide space-related services to neighbouring countries.

The programme is expected to include joint satellite construction and launch, engineering training, and training in satellite hardware and software development.

A formal announcement on the start of the programme is expected in October during the Russia-Africa Forum framework in Moscow.

The initiative is also being linked to the just-concluded Heroes Day commemoration.
