The Junior National Council has commenced with their induction and orientation today, where they learn about the parliamentary process and how they should conduct themselves during sessions.

Before starting with their programme, the young MPs observed a moment of silence for the late Lamech Mwanyangapo, a veteran employee from the National Broadcasting Corporation.

The orientation and capacity-building programme of the Junior National Council was established through a motion moved and adopted in the National Council, reflecting the council's commitment to public participation and nurturing the next generation of leaders and custodians of Namibia's democratic values.

The Director in the Office of the Chairperson of the National Council, Petrus Kavhura, reiterated, "This composition mirrors the National Council itself. So this diverse representation ensures that the voices of young people from across Namibia are heard, respected and amplified within this forum."

The first session of the fourth Junior National Council creates an opportunity for young people to act as voices of their peers and to debate matters of national and international concern.

The session aims to equip the young participants with leadership skills to become proactive members of their communities and role models to others.

"By the end of this programme, you will be able to understand the processes. Now, this session is a unique opportunity for you to engage in meaningful dialogue, exchange diverse perspectives and foster unity and collaboration. As I indicated yesterday to say, this is an opportunity whereby you are going to network with others."

42 learners from across all 14 regions will discuss three motions over the course of the next five days.

These include water and sanitation infrastructure in schools and communities, equal educational opportunities, and mental health and psychosocial support for children.

On Monday they are expected to elect the Chairperson, Vice Chairperson and Chief Whip for the Junior National Council before commencing with their discussions.
