A total of 6,263 gender-based violence (GBV)-related cases were reported nationally during the 2023/2024 financial year.

This was revealed by the Acting Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Major General Anne-Marie Nainda, on Thursday during the launch of the Awareness Campaign on Gender-Based Violence, Violence Against Women and Children, Online Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Trafficking in Persons at Omuthiya in the Oshikoto Region.

"The Ohangwena Region recorded 662 cases, accounting for 10.6% of the national total, while the Oshikoto recorded 440 cases, representing 7.0%."

She further said during 2024/25, the national GBV-related cases increased slightly to 6,346 cases. 

Assault-Common was recorded as the predominant offence in the Ohangwena Region, while rape cases were the most prevalent in the Oshikoto Region, highlighting the need for urgent action to address gender-based violence.
