The police in the Omusati Region are calling on young people in the Ruacana Constituency to work closely with law enforcement in the fight against crime.

The call was made during a youth engagement on crime prevention held in Oshifo, Ruacana Constituency, on Monday.

Three suspects have been apprehended by the police in Otjiwarongo after allegedly robbing an American tourist couple at a local lodge in town.

Otjozondjupa Police Community Liaison Officer Maureen Mbeha said the suspects are between the ages of 24 and 33.

Ohangwena Governor Kadiva Hamutumwa has called on communities to restore cultural and moral values as part of efforts to combat gender-based violence and other forms of criminal activity.

Hamutumwa made the call during the National Prayer Day at Odibo St. Mary Anglican Parish.

The Kavango West Region has recorded 168 road accidents between April and August this year, while GBV cases have reduced.

This was shared during the national prayer day held at Nkurenkuru.

Police in the Ohangwena Region have expressed concern over the rising number of suicide cases and other serious crimes recorded in the region over the past three years.

Police Commander Ottilie Kashuupulwa says 189 suicide cases were recorded since 2023, of which 37 are this year alone.

Okahandja residents are jointly amplifying their voices to address the growing problem of drug abuse and crime among young people in the town.

Residents say drug use is destroying the lives of young people while contributing to rising levels of crime and violence in the community. 

A total of 6,263 gender-based violence (GBV)-related cases were reported nationally during the 2023/2024 financial year.

Reported crime in the Oshana Region declined from over 11,000 cases during the 2024-2025 to 10,267 during the 2025-2026 financial year. 

The National Council MP Abner Shikongo informed the National Council during the motivation of the Oshana Regional Council 2025-2027 financial year.

The police have called on members of the public to voluntarily surrender illegal and unwanted firearms and ammunition without fear of arrest or prosecution.

This is in line with an amnesty period for the month of September, launched on Wednesday in the capital.

Residents of Rehoboth took part in a protest to raise awareness about drug and alcohol abuse, as well as rising criminal activity in their communities on Saturday.
