Namibia's first artificial intelligence (AI) institution, NOVA, has positioned itself to help address the growing demand for future-ready AI technicians in Africa.
 
The institution is preparing young people with practical application, product development, innovation and entrepreneurship to capitalise on digital economy.
 
 NOVA was established in response to the gap between the number of graduates produced in Africa and the limited employment opportunities available to them.
 
Its Executive Director, Immanuel Antonius, explained that Africa produces millions of graduates each year, but a significant number struggle to enter the formal job market.

"With Nova, what really came to mind was when I was invited to the G20 Summit in South Africa to moderate a session, and there were questions about Africa lagging behind in AI. We realised that Africa produces about 12 million graduates every year, but only three million are absorbed by the market, while nine million continue going back to the streets because they don’t have formal jobs. So, we were prompted to create something specifically for Africa.”
  
Antonius said AI is increasingly shaping the future of work.
 
The institution offers three core programmes: AI and Machine Learning, Robotics and Automation, and 3D Modelling and Fabrication.
 
"If students are studying artificial intelligence and machine learning, they should focus on developing products that integrate these technologies. Those concentrating on robotics ought to ensure that their projects are pertinent to that domain. Similarly, in the realm of 3D modelling and digital fabrication, it is essential for students to create projects that are relevant to these fields. For example, in 3D modelling, we collaborate with children who have lost limbs. Our 3D printers are capable of producing prosthetic arms for these children."
 
Antonius underscored that NOVA wants to move away from an education model that focuses mainly on studying to pass examinations.
 
Instead, students are encouraged to learn through practical projects, develop solutions to real-world challenges and showcase their innovations at national exhibitions.
 
Through its incubation process, the institution also aims to help students test, refine and scale their products, potentially turning innovative ideas into viable businesses and employment opportunities.
