The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has highlighted its expertise in telling the story of trade and the critical role Namibian ports play in the economy.
This was discussed when NBC Director General Menesia Muinjo paid a courtesy visit to Namport in Walvis Bay.
The NBC Director General and her Senior Leadership Team visited Namport management to explore collaboration opportunities.
From goods arriving at the Walvis Bay harbour to their journey into the hands of consumers, the two public institutions identified opportunities to bring the story of trade closer to Namibians.
"Many people out there actually have got no appreciation for the critical role that NamPort, a public institution, actually does. everything else that we use, the cell phones that we use, they travel all the way from China, but somewhere they pass through ports, and that's another unique opportunity I think that we can actually use to educate the public out there of the critical role that Namport actually plays within the economy," said NamPort CEO, Andrew Kanime.
While expressing her gratitude to Namport for previous support, the NBC Director General, Menesia Muinjo, said the collaboration has the potential to help Namibia realise some of the NDP6 goals.
"And like what you also said, it is the ports and trade. We need to make this a household name on the NBC platforms, that educational aspect in various languages. We have done enough already, but I think we can do more. And also as public enterprises, the message that is coming through now is that we need to harness and use the resources together, hold hands and see how we can realise some of the NDP6 goals, national goals. So I think basically that's the key thing, really."
Other members of the NBC Senior Leadership Team cited various opportunities that the collaboration could explore.
Among these is a dedicated Namport trade and logistics series, as well as using existing programmes such as Business Today to explain developments at the port and their impact on businesses and consumers.
Another opportunity is for NBC to take viewers on a journey through the supply chain.
Acting NBC Chief for News and Programming, Peter Denk, reiterated, "If you take a truck from here, as they are being loaded, as things are being cleared, and we can take it right through to where it's delivered. So these are things that we're thinking about, documentaries of that nature."
"We have noticed that Eye on SADC is one of the critical elements of things that we do, the news programmes that are broadcast across the region. And where Namport is, at the moment, I believe it's one of those great platforms on top of what Mr Denk has alluded to, "added Chief Commercial Officer for the broadcaster, Nico Mwiya.
The two public institutions further stressed that their partnership could have an educational focus, with content aimed at helping young Namibians understand the maritime sector and the career opportunities it offers.
