A dream that began beneath a tree has grown into a place of learning and hope for the children of Otuvero village in Kaoko land.

Tjiraakanua Zahungama established the community kindergarten in 2015, and today, with support from development partners, the centre continues to expand access to early childhood education and nutrition.

Tjiraakanua Zahungama said her journey began in 2015, when she started teaching children under a tree.

“When this school began, it was established under this tree. The tree trunk, where the delegation is currently seated, served as my learners' chairs, while the tree trunk itself acted as my blackboard.”

Despite limited resources and inconsistent attendance, Zahungama remained determined, encouraging parents to see education as a pathway to a brighter future for their children.

A major breakthrough came in 2020, when she received training through the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, while the construction of the center was completed with funding from the European Union and implementation support from UNICEF.

She explained that the training strengthened her teaching skills, while the introduction of instant porridge in 2025 helped address children's nutritional needs.

“As we speak now, I have two classes of 33 learners. The small number of learners that I had has increased significantly.”

Zahungama highlighted the importance of stakeholder support in improving children's learning and well-being, with enrolment now reported at 66 learners across two classes.

The World Food Programme has also emphasised the role of nutrition in promoting school attendance and effective learning.

“The ECD porridge, the instant porridge, is a very important component of keeping our young ones in the centre, making sure that they are attending and learning at the same time," explained the Programme Associate for School-Based Programme and Nutrition, Outarnolda Booysen.

Traditional leader of the Otuvero Traditional Authority, Tjinezuma Kavari expressed the community's appreciation for the contributions of development partners and urged stakeholders to continue supporting early childhood education.

“We as parents really appreciate that stakeholders have been so active and participatory in the provision of education to our children.”

Zahungama's story demonstrates how determination, community participation and sustained partnerships can create lasting opportunities for young learners.

From humble beginnings beneath a tree, Otuvero's kindergarten continues to nurture hope for a brighter future.
