The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has focused on fire safety and emergency preparedness through a two-day fire drill training aimed at strengthening awareness of how to respond to fire incidents in the workplace.
The training highlighted the importance of understanding evacuation procedures, identifying emergency exits and knowing where to assemble during an emergency.
Such exercises help employees prepare for situations in which a quick and coordinated response could save lives.
Windhoek Fire Brigade Services Senior Station Officer Fillipus Sikongo, who facilitated the training, said they covered basic fire safety, preventive measures and the development of systems to guide the corporation's response during emergencies.
“This week, employees from various regions underwent training focused on basic fire safety, preventive measures, and the principles of fire safety and prevention. They also learned how to develop their own documentation and systems to help them respond to emergencies and ensure business continuity. Most importantly, the training aimed to save lives and protect the property of this important institution.”
A Kavango East-based employee, Johannes Lengi explained that the training helped staff better understand fire safety signs, evacuation procedures and the importance of designated assembly points during emergencies.
“We have learned a lot. We often see signs but do not understand what they mean. For example, the sign behind us is sometimes ignored, and people park their cars there. However, we have now learned that the area must be kept clear for emergencies. In the event of a fire, the fire marshal must evacuate all employees from the building to the designated assembly point, conduct a headcount and ensure that everyone has evacuated safely.”
For NBC, the initiative forms part of efforts to safeguard employees, visitors and its facilities while ensuring that broadcasting operations can continue with minimal disruption in the event of an emergency.
Through practical training and increased awareness, the corporation aims to ensure that staff members understand their roles and responsibilities when responding to fire i
