Kavango West has been urged to translate the White Cane Day theme into practical action to improve independence for blind and partially sighted persons.
This call was made during the commemoration of International White Cane Day in Nkurenkuru, celebrated under the theme "White Cane Key to Mobility and Independence".
Speakers said the white cane is more than a mobility tool, it is a key that opens doors to everyday life, helping users navigate surroundings, identify obstacles and travel with confidence.
They, however, stressed that the white cane alone cannot remove barriers such as vehicles parked across walkways, inaccessible documents, or unfair recruitment processes.
The Ukwangali Traditional Authority calls on its people to create a safe and inclusive environment for the people living with disabilities.
At least 14 learners from Dr Romanus Kampungu Secondary School and six selected community members in attendance received white canes.
