National Council Chairperson Lukas Muha has encouraged active public engagement in the law-making processes as it is a critical component of democratic governance.

He made the call while engaging community members at Gibeon in the Hardap Region.

The community engagement was part of the National Council Outreach Programme, with the main objective being to create an awareness of the review and oversight role of the National Council.

It also aims to increase the public's understanding of the House of Parliament, said Muha.

"Colonial rule is not bad in totality, and there are things that are good and there are things that are bad, but our aim today is to look at the laws, which I emphasised today that when those laws were enacted that are now imposed on us, we were not involved. My elders are here, we were not involved. We were just told this is a law that has been enacted and if there were leaders in this country, please implement."

At the occasion, Secretary to the National Council Tousy Namiseb explained how the public can participate in the legislative process.

"We want you, as the members of the community, to participate. We want you to tell us what you want from the lawmakers."

The National Council Chairperson also paid a courtesy call to the traditional leaders in the Hardap Region.
