The Katima Mulilo Magistrate's Court sentenced Nzundamo Kabala to an effective 21 years in prison after he was found guilty on two of six charges.

Kabala was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the murder of Falali Mahoto and 5 years in prison for the attempted murder of his former girlfriend and the deceased's cousin, Kahimbi Mahoto.

According to the charge sheet, Kabala was at the Bezi bar along the Zambezi River when he allegedly began assaulting his long-term girlfriend Kahimbi, despite the efforts of her cousin Falali to stop him.

Kabala opened fire and fatally shot Fatali in the chest, injuring Kahimbi in the right arm.

According to the deceased's elder brother, Ntesa Mahoto, who spoke to the nbc News team, while the sentence was given to demonstrate the truth about the events of that fateful night, the sentence of 21 years is insufficient because the accused showed no remorse for his actions.

"This person was very serious; his intentions were very clear, and he ran away from the scene, and he still can't apologize and acknowledge the many pieces of evidence that show he did the act; he can't stand like a man as he stood that day shooting these people; he can't stand and apologize, and then him getting — it's basically 21 years. He's 40 years old now, he'll be 61 when he comes out, he's still fit, and if the person can't apologize after 4 years for killing someone he knew was close to him, I'm not sure what we're saying as a society."

Magistrate Berry Mufana acquitted Kabala on four other counts, including failing to safeguard his firearm, negligence with a firearm, handling a firearm under the influence of alcohol, and discharging a firearm in public.
