The Namibia National Students Organization (NANSO) says there is still discrimination against the hairstyles of learners in public schools, which is a violation of their rights.
NANSO's secretary-general Malcolm Kambanzera, without any specific reference, condemned schools that are ignoring existing laws that ought to protect learners against abuse and to uphold access to education.
The student organization, Kambanzera, says it will propose the appointment of a committee to enforce a nondiscriminatory hairstyle policy for schools to the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture.
Meanwhile, NANSO's General Students Council has also set its sights on eliminating harmful socio-cultural norms affecting children, including child labor, child marriages, and the inaccessibility of sanitary towels, among others.
They demand the immediate installation of sanitary towel dispensers at public schools.
Kambanzera stressed that the benefits of the emerging green hydrogen industry must also benefit students and the broader society.
Esther Shitana was also elected chairperson of the GSC, along with former gender secretary Lu-Ann Eysele and former tertiary education secretary Vivian !Nou|Gawaseb were reassigned as new alternate members.
The pursuit of broader access to quality tertiary education is also firmly on the student lobby group's radar.
Just a few years ago, NANSO organized a mass protest demanding the scrapping of the mandatory registration fees at both UNAM and NUST.
