A veld fire that had been raging in the ||Kharas Mountain area since last Friday has been extinguished and is no longer a threat.

Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency Councillor Gertjie Witbooi said this as he gave an update on the veld fire.

Witbooi said the fire, which was caused by lightning, spread across about five farms and destroyed grazing land.

"The current status of this fire is that it is under control, and we had extinguished most areas affected by this fire by yesterday, the 27th. The team that we coordinated was the Namibian Defense Force, the Namibian Police, commercial farmers, farm owners, and farm laborers from these farms. It was coordinated through our constituency office, through the headquarters of the ||Kharas Regional Council. Not much damage was done to this farm, but between five and six farms were totally burned down. No human or animal lives were recorded."

Witbooi was confident veld fires will be contained today.
