Benitha Imbamba, the chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, has warned employers to stop bullying employees and engaging in unfair labor practices in the workplace.
Imbamba said this during the Regional Council's annual meeting at Swakopmund.
Imbamba, while warning management that action will be taken against such employers for mistreating their employees, called on labor and health inspectors to monitor and assess working conditions on a regular basis.
She points out that mistreating employees at work can contribute to their becoming depressed as they work in a hostile environment.
"Mental health has become a great concern; I have noted with dismay that our decisions let others feel worthless for their efforts; we are only as good as the next person."
The founder of National Mental Health Care Namibia, Cathy Kambanda, has encouraged employees to report any inappropriate behavior at the workplace to management without any delay.
Kambanda believes this will minimize mental health problems among employees.
"If you are not in a good mental health position, you cannot operate to your full potential, so you get people who have suicidal thoughts, people who have anxiety, and people who are very withdrawn from family and friends because what affects you during the majority of your day from morning to evening."
A former employee, Fabiola Zondjembo, committed suicide due to alleged unfair treatment and misuse of power by the Shoprite management.
A demonstration was held in the town over this matter, where Shoprite management was accused of unfair treatment and misusing its powers.
