Plans to upgrade Otavi Magistrate's Court underway

Plans to improve the Otavi Magistrate's Court are on the recommendation cards following a visit by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Capital Projects and Legal Affairs, which found the building not conducive to court sessions.

This was confirmed by committee chairperson Tjekero Tweya during a courtesy call to the Otjozondjupa Governors Office, represented by Regional Council Chairperson Marlene Mbakera.

Otjozondjupa Regional Council welcomes creation of special wildlife court

Otjozondjupa Regional Council has welcomed the creation of the special wildlife court in the region as a means to speedily handle cases and deter would-be offenders dealing in protected game products.

This sentiment was shared by Otjozondjupa Regional Council Chairperson, Marlene Mbakera, during a courtesy call to the Governor's office by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Constitutional and Legal Affairs at the Otjiwarongo.

According to Mbakera, the region's central location makes it an entry and exit zone for poachers.

Systems not talking to each other creates loopholes - Tweya

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources says the findings from the investigation into illegal lithium mining at Uis indicate that there are some loopholes in the law that need fixing.

Tjekero Tweya informed Erongo Governor Neville Andre that the investigation shows that ministries, regional governments, and responsible agencies are not talking to each other to close the loopholes.

Tweya dismayed over non completion of Fish Farming Community Project at Keetmanshoop

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Tjekero Tweya has expressed dismay over the non-completion of the Fonteintjie Fish Farming Community Project, at Keetmanshoop.

The Government invested about N$26 million towards constructing the modern aquaculture production facility.

The oversight committee was informed during their visit that the main contractor abandoned the project in 2019, due to irregular payments discovered. 

Rent Control Bill to be drafted

The says that the Rent Control Bill is currently undergoing drafting by an assigned team of experts.

 

The ministry's public relations department says the final draft is expected to be done before the end of the 2023–2024 financial year.

 

The ministry says it is subject to stakeholders' consultations and refinements.

 

The Rent Control Board of Namibia was set up in 2018 by the former Minister of Industrialization, Trade, and SME Development, Tjekero Tweya.

 

Opposition MPs object postponement to motivate report of mass resignation of fishermen

Some opposition parliamentarians have objected to the indefinite postponement on the motivation of the report of the mass resignation of fishermen. 

The report was compiled by the National Assembly Select Committee appointed and tasked by the House Speaker to investigate the mass resignation of fishermen employed through the government Redressing Programme. 

The Committee Chairperson Tjekero Tweya postponed the motivation indefinitely just as he was about to motivate it.
