The verdict on illegal lithium mining in the Daures Constituency of the Erongo Region is ready to be tabled in Parliament.

This is according to the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources, Tjekero Tweya, who said the results might be tabled on Thursday or next week.

In April 2024, the then-chief whip of the Landless People's Movement, Henny Seibeb, tabled a motion on illegal lithium mining in the Daures Constituency.

This prompted the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources to investigate the matter at Uis and in surrounding areas.

Chairperson Tjekero Tweya and members of parliament, Bernadus Swartbooi, Kletus Karondo, Maria Elago, and Maria Kamutali, held public hearings in May last year.

Tweya confirmed to nbc News that the report is ready and will be presented in parliament on Thursday or next week Tuesday.

In a telephonic interview, former parliamentarian Henny Seibeb expressed concern, claiming that the committee has been reluctant to table the findings.

"If leaders or parliamentarians are unable to solve people's problems, why do they need parliament then? Huh? Because the idea is to solve problems; that's why people are elected. If not, then what is the purpose of having a parliament? Then it becomes pointless, and the people just get paid for nothing."

Seibeb urged the committee to speed up the process and make the findings public before this parliament is dissolved and new members of parliament are sworn in next month.

Poor and marginalised communities at Uis, Okombahe, and Omatjete repeatedly voiced serious concerns about illegal lithium mining.

Since 2022, they have continuously demanded the removal of the Dauredaman Traditional Authority chief, Sagarias Seibeb, through petitions.

Former parliamentarian Seibeb's motion called for a ban on lithium mining so that the government could determine the significance of lithium deposits and their market value.

He also questioned the legality of the mining operations in the Daures Constituency.

The former lawmaker's motion further stated that the community does not trust the mining and environmental commissioners, who are allegedly not transparent in what they do.
